Fluoride-tandpasta

Brushing your teeth is a key part of daily oral care. But did you know the toothpaste you use can make a huge difference? Fluoride toothpaste is one of the most highly recommended options by dentists and dental hygienists. What exactly is fluoride, and how does it affect your teeth? We’ll explain everything you need to know!

What Is Fluoride Toothpaste?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in the earth’s crust, water sources, and in human bones and teeth. It’s been used for years in toothpaste to prevent tooth decay and cavities. Fluoride toothpaste is effective because it helps remineralize your teeth—meaning it strengthens the enamel and makes it more resistant to acid attacks. In simple terms: fewer cavities.

How Does Fluoride Work?

Fluoride targets developing bones and teeth, strengthening tooth enamel in both baby and adult teeth to provide optimal protection.

After you eat, acids in your saliva can cause demineralization, dissolving calcium and phosphate beneath the surface of your teeth. At other times, when your saliva is less acidic, minerals are added back—this process is known as remineralization. If fluoride is present during remineralization, the minerals deposited become stronger than normal, making your teeth more resistant to future acid damage.

Potential Risks of Fluoride Toothpaste

While pure fluoride is toxic in large amounts, toothpaste contains a safe level of fluoride—typically 1 to 1.5 mg per gram. That said, excessive use can still be harmful to the kidneys, bones, nerves, and muscles of both adults and children.

  • Swallowing large amounts of toothpaste, especially in young children, can be dangerous.

  • Excessive fluoride intake during pregnancy may negatively affect fetal brain development.

So yes—fluoride toothpaste is effective, as long as it’s used in the proper amount.

Fluoride Toothpaste for Young Children

It’s recommended that young children use toothpaste with lower fluoride concentrations, such as Smyle’s special Kids Tabs, to reduce the risk of negative developmental effects. Children should always spit out toothpaste, not swallow it, and toothpaste should be kept out of their reach.

Fluoride Toothpaste: Your Best Defense Against Cavities

All in all, fluoride toothpaste is a reliable tool for maintaining good oral hygiene. It:

  • Prevents tooth decay

  • Strengthens enamel

  • Reduces the risk of cavities

Still, it should be used mindfully, as misuse or overuse can pose health risks. As long as you use the right amount, fluoride remains a safe and effective ingredient.

Not fully convinced? Prefer to brush without fluoride? Smyle also offers fluoride-free toothpaste tablets that you can check out here.
